I am barely literate when it comes to spelling and grammar and I am absolutely not a social media... socialite...thing yeah... clearly!
In a world where we are competing with people who have been social media celebrities from the age of 8 is social media worth our time as a marketing tool?
Especially as an artist or a photographer, Model, MUA... every time you go out someone has a new site you should check out that really works well to get you exposure (yet you have never heard of it)
As it stands most of us are Juggling Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Pintrest, youtube, google+, model mayhem and then they throw in fine art america, 500PX, viewbug... (add your own in the comments) These are great tools.... but when I started I could have spent my whole life on these without getting anything done... and I still probably spend more time than I need to.
I am far from being the most popular person on social media, much less photographer. Last year when facebook changes some algorithms on the pages my project 365 photos overnight went from having 60-100 likes to less than 20... needless to say I kind of got discouraged and that was virtually the end of my project 365.
feeling like i needed to compensate, I did payed advertisement with a couple local platforms. A year later my metrics on my website still show social media was a higher source of traffic on my website than the payed solutions. in fact in 1 month I received the referrals from social medias my payed platforms sent me in a year.... GREAT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? HOW Do I turn that into actual Marketing?
We went to Florida for the Holidays Got to take some great shots of sunsets and peers like we don't see them on the French Riviera I had been on instagram for years but would rarely get more than 12 likes on pictures that had been up for years. I have clients that use intsagram and have a huge following from it but I didn't know what I was doing wrong. I started researching the HASHTAGS and I started testing them, testing the time of day I had most responses...
My new years resolution if you could call it that was to start maximizingIntsagram... Since everyone thinks it's going to replace facebook I need to get it!. The first step was coming up with an Image.... something people would recognize I had seen the Tile puzzle thing and fell in love with it (i did not invent it) WHY? Because I love HUGE prints of my photography when you come on my page it's like coming into a digital gallery. Also Instead of constantly having to post images to maintain momentum I post a different part of the same image every hour or so. This also means if 1 image is composed of 6 squares that each get 100 likes the image has a total of 600 likes some from same people some from different people.... the same people are re-peat visitors to the page, the new people are new people (I usually return likes generously to new people to get them exited to come back)
Of course Being on the South Coast of France (probably anywhere in the world) I could skip all this and just post naked ladies and get a bunch of likes that way right?
If the goal was to collect likes that would be a perfectly valid strategy.
However I have discovered my clients don't necessarily leave a visible social media footprint. Most of my paying jobs are Commercial portraits. I need to look like the image they want to give... the last image they want to give was tat I caused them to look like they searched for porn at work when they were actually legitimately trying to book a photographer.
